Language functions.

Postby 12091347 Rim Jae Won on Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:21 pm

The different functions of language have different linguistic demands.
And each function has its own typical language structures.
For example, When asking a permission or requesting, functions can be ' Do you mind if I...?', ' Would it be possible for...?', 'Please let me to...;. When wishing hoping, functions can be ' I am hopeful that...' or 'It is my wish' . When warning of conequence, we can say ' Don't do it' or ' You will pay for.... with....'
Language functions have different meaning in the context.
Let me take an instance, When I am doing a harsh work, i can ask my friends or someone "Please give me a hand" for a purpose to seek a help. But if i want to read friend's palm and say "Give me a hand", it's purpose is not seeking an Assistance.
I am not sure whether I understand the topics in this ODB assignment.
I wish I made it..

Yeah,It often makes us very counfused.
Besides, we're not even Native English speaker, so those idiomatic expressions are sometimes hard to understand.
Do you have any experience misundertood the meaning of what someone said?
